Hello,

I just found this forum again. Seems I registered some time ago.

I posted this question on another forum, and several forum members pointed me here. I had forgotten there wasa forum just for us Yamaha people. I hope somebody can shed some light on my problem. Here goes...

Last year I went through a host of issues with my 1996 Saltwater SeriesII carbed outboard.

In the end, after rebuilding the carbs I was back on the water with no issues. I probably put 50-60 hours on the engine since then. I winterized the motor in the late fall by fogging the ports and adding fuel stabilizer to the tank. At that time I replaced the primer bulb, the fuel filter (went to a racor with drainable bowl), replaced the fuel tank pickup and several fuel line hoses, and I also replaced both fuel pumps.

This spring I swapped the fuel filter (with Raycor bowl) and was on my way again. Or so I thought. Last night an issue presented itself, slightly different than last year.

The engine will not idle, and stalls at low speeds. To get on plane you have to advance the throttle while giving it a couple of flicks of the choke switch. Without choke, the engine will not climb RPMs while in gear. It will rev freely in neutral, but under load there is a lack of power and it will stall out. By giving it a couple of shots of choke and full throttle it will get up on plane. It will stay on plane with no noticable issues above 3000 rpm. Slow speeds and idle speeds are tough. It will stall out, and you can feel a vibration. Getting it back on the trailer was a nightmare because it must have stalled 15 times.

If this was a chainsaw, I would say the low speed jets are the issue. Is there an equivalent set of jets on these carbs that I could just clean, or do I have to order carb kits and rebuild again? If I can service these carbs while they are still mounted on the outboard, that would be great.

The primer bulb stays hard, so I don't think its a fuel delivery issue. The primer bulb and most of the fuel lines and fuel tank pickup were addressed last year.

I have heard that I should be using a 10 micron filter. How do I know which one I have?

I look forward to any comments.

test the compression and spark. if both pass its time to dissasemble the carbs . by chokeing it you force it rich and bypass all the jets.

I have low compression in Number 1, but its been like that for 3-4 years (one day I'll address that one). Spark is fine in all 6.

I drained the carb bowls into a clear container, and obersved fine particles. Most of it is orange, and some black. I don't think this crud should be in there. I will rebuild the carbs, but don't want to be back in the same spot 50 hours from now.

I have the racor filter with drainable bowl. Can I get a 10 micron element for this, or do I need to start fresh? I would also like a good on-line source for the filter if anybody knows of one.

Re: 1996 Yammi SSII carbed issues (ethanol?)

Here is a follow-up question. I started pulling the carbs off, and noticed that the pilot screws were all turned out around 2 full turns. I have a generic manual that indicates all should be less than that.

I am not sure exactly which engine I have as designated in this manual. The manual list S200TR, L200TR and P200TR. Does anybody know which one of those the 1996 Yamaha 200 Saltwater Series II would be? If not, any idea of about where I should start on the pilot screws? There are six of them, 2 per carburetor.

Thanks,

Jon

Start at about 1 1/4 turn from a soft stop.

Jon: Your Racor is already 10 micron. Sounds like you may need another carb cleaning. :( :(

Wow, I don't understand how the junk is getting by the two filters? The filter element on the engine appears to be clean. There was some grit in the bowl, which I emptied. There was also some junk in the old Racor, but that was swapped out.

I rebuilt 2 of the 3 carbs last night. I did the top and middle carb. There was quite a bit of gunk in the bowls, especially the middle carb. I would describe the stuff as orange/white in color. I soaked all the parts in the gallon can of carb cleaning solution. I then scraped out any remaining residue from the bowl. This is the second time I have done this, so I feel pretty comfortable doing it.

How hard is it to sync the carbs? Is it done like the carbs on a motorcycle? I have the 6 chamber manometer somewhere.

Thanks for the starting point on the pilot screw adjustment!! I will post my results

The carb rebuild worked. This time I didn't buy the carb kits, just soaked, reamed the jets clean and put it back together. Its running very well. Had my first test run this AM in heavy fog. Boat ran great.

Anybody know why the bottom carb seems to have the most crud in it every time?
