Looking for some help - Last week I noticed bulb would not stay firm and found the first fuel line under the cowl had a hole in it so I replaced that and did the poppet valve and thermostat while I was working on motor. I also changed the plugs. Got everything back together and now she idles terribly shooting between 1100 and 1900 popping and sputtering. Eventually one of the pops will cause it to stall out. I've ran a can of seafoam and new fuel through it. I switched CDMs around, tried different plugs to see if one of the new ones was a dud, brought the idle screws on the top 2 carbs by as much as 1/2 a turn each and she is still doing it. I went and picked up a fuel diaphram kit and am going to try that now. Any ideas? What would I try next if the fuel diaphragm doesn't correct problem? The popping sounds like a misfire and seems real hard on the old motor. Should I redo link and sync?

Do you have all the spark plug wires on the correct cylinders? Have you checked the flywheel key? All the carb linkages in good condition?

The plug wires are in sequence 1234 to the cylinders so yes they are. The carb linkages seem good and all the butterflies are closed at idle and they open and close together. I have not checked the flywheel key. How do I do that?

Well it seems I got the problem sorted. I started to lean towards electrical and while I was doing step 1 of the CDI troubleshooting guide I found the problem. The first step is to disconnect the stator wires from rectifier. When I did that I immediately noticed that one of the 2 bullet connectors came apart way too easy. Once I pushed it in made contact, and started her up again the problem was gone. I have a nice steady idle again.
