I AM STARTING ALL OVER I HOPE.I had posted a while back/couple months ago.Johnson 150 or 120 Force. The boat came with both and i am having electrical trouble with the johnson from what i understand. So now i am gonna try the Force.I have it up on a homemade stand./Hooked up the wiring harness and just turned the key to see if she would go.Very tight and did not want to go.Pulled the pluggs and turned her over without much resistance.Just wondering if the impella is jammed up and can cause this?Hoping and Praying this one will be the one. What do you think Frank.........HELPPPPPPPPPPPP

Hi Frank,

You say it is kind of tight... I am going to take that as it doesn't crank over very fast.

I had that problem last year. After some research i concluded that my starter was begining to fail. as well as I read that these engines like a bit higher CCA battery. I replaced my starter along with an upgraded 1000CAA battery. It cranks over very fast an smooth now.

I have that exact year/model engine so feel free to ask any questions.

Hope this helps.

With the plugs out you should be able to turn it by hand. Remember to go clockwise, you dont want to reverse the impeller. Usually if I dont know when the impeller was replaced, I replace it. make sure your battery is fully charged with clean connections. As far as CCA for a marine battery, I run an 875 CCA battery to start my 6.5ltr V-8 diesel. With a hot battery, she should spin fast, if not maybe a look at the starter should be next.

Have not done anything with it today but how easy should it turn by hand with no plugs in ?

Hi Frank,

You asked how I like my engine.. I am happy with it. It is showing signs of wear now as it gets used alot. and unfortunatly its out of commision right now for a broken reed but should be fixed tomorrow if UPS brings me my gasket. Its like any engine.. maintain it, dont beat on it. and it will run well. As for your question about how hard it is to turn the engine without plugs. There should be a very drastic difference without the plugs. It should be Very difficult (but not impossible) to turn the engine from the flywheel with the plugs in. With them out it should get MUCH easier but still not very easy there is still a fair amount of drag on mine even with the plugs out. The thing I notice is that with the plugs out it turns smoother because there isnt the change between compression strokes, like you will feel with the plugs in.

If you are really concerned with the impeller. Change it. It actually a pretty easy job and should be done as routine mantanence. I change mine every year.

Where are you located?

Re: 1997 120 Force/I am starting over/HELPPPP

Up here in Cumberland .I took the lower unit off.Very easy to do.I do believe i need a new starter/Looks like to me someone tried to rebuild or something there is clear caulking or sealer around the edges.I could not get it to turn over with the plugs in./but no problem with them out.I think i do need new starter and stronger battery.Starter is very cheap looking to me.But i see new ones are very high in price.Gonna take the water pump apart tomorrow.Anywhere to get used parts here in R.I. dont want to spend to much money on it just yet dont know what i have here.GOOD OR BAD???????
