1997 225 SWSII EFI cough at cold start

Both engines cough at cold start.
I usually hold the key in to choke while starting. Starts in 5 secs, then will run for a few seconds and cough and die. This usually happens three times and then runs fine all day. idles at ~1200 rpm until warm and then to 750.

Engines have 510hrs, new VST filters, low pressure pumps, plugs.

Is this normal?
Thanks.

waste of time pusing the choke on an EFI motor. does absolutly nothing.
yes your engine is broke, EFI should not cough nor die.
its trying to tell you its sick.
get it to a Dr or it may die.
when was the last O2 sensor test/cleaning ?

i cleaned them with a seafoam soak this spring. did not test them though.
do i need a test harness to perform the resistance and voltage test?

thanks.

Re: 1997 225 SWSII EFI cough at cold start

i bought a winky blinky, got code 33 when starting up which is normal. engine ran for a few minutes then coughed and died. i started up again and code 1 came up.
Everything ran fine after that.
So it seems that going from the timing advance for warm up to normal operation is where it coughs and dies.

This is happening to both engines.
I have heard mixed reviews that one/two coughs on cold startup is normal while others say this should not happen with an efi.
Thanks for any replies.

code 33 simply means the engine is warming up, code 1 is normal.
coughing and dying on EFI is NOT normal.
the ECU sets NO codes for any O2 sensor malfunctions even if you dissconect it.
the ECU is rather stupid, it sometimes cannot detect an inrange sensor failure.
but that cough can play havoc on low pressure fuel pumps and bearings and flywheel keys.
its a lean sneeze
its actually the fuel mix trying to burn on the wrong side of the piston trying to suddenly reverse the motor.
need to find out why.
could be as simple as a link and sync.
how often does the EFI motor in your car start, copugh, die?
this simple speed/density EFI setup works very well. if it does not its simply broke and needs fixing.
now that we know the ECU sees all is well it knocks off a few tests.

Re: 1997 225 SWSII EFI cough at cold start

Update:
I performed a link and synch per manual. Symptoms still exist.

At the next cold start, I pumped both primer bulbs to firm, they were initially soft. The motor started and ran fine through warm up. I never had to pump the bulbs in the past.
I then changed the primer bulbs, they were ten years old.
I have noticed every morning the bulbs are soft. sometimes after the boat sits for 30 minutes after warmed up they are a little squishy so I pump them before turning over. If I don't the engine will sputter and cough and more than normal blue smoke.

Could the fuel be back siphoning from the VST back to the tank causing a rich oil and lean fuel condition? what would cause this?
Thanks.

Problem resolved. See this post:
