I have a 1997 4.3LXH Gen+ Thunderbolt V setup. I have the Mercruiser #18, 25, and 32 Service Manuals, I understand base timing, I know how to set the ignition into base timing mode, I know what the base timing spec is for my setup (10 deg BTDC), and I know the procedure to set the timing. What is not clear in any of the service manuals is the timing marks on the balancer and timing cover. My engine has the plastic timing cover that has the molded in timing indicator (with the groove in it) and the balancer has a zero degrees groove (at TDC) in it. It would seem to me that these indicators are for finding zero degrees @ TDC. Without an advance timing light or degree tape it does not appear to me that one could set the timing to 10 degrees BTDC. I only have a standard timing light and have not been able to find timing tape for the 6.15” balancer I have on my engine. I suppose I could make some.
Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions? Thanks in advance.
