Good evening,

I have a new to me 1997 Sea Ray 230 overnighter... come to find out it has a cracked block and I need a long block. It has a 5.7lx vortec alpha one gen 2 drive.

I'm debating on what to do and want to order the motor tomorrow. Should I buy a rebuild from someone that claims its a marine engine, bigger cam(roller), and better pistons.(2 year warranty). Or buy a new long block from one of the several people I found online? Or should I buy a new or rebuilt 6.2 longblock?

My first issue is the electric fuel pump being needed. I currently have mechanical and would prefer to keep it this way. Are there new block available with the mechanical pad?

2nd can the alpha drive handle the 6.2? I mainly cruise around 3200rpms don't beat on the boat too bad but do like to pull tubers and some short wide open runs.

3rd quality I don't know who to trust. Lets face it on the warranty... unless its doa there pretty much isn't one. There can always be some excuse for them not to honor it. (bad mixture, bad install, timing wrong...) Are the gm marine long blocks good? Reliable? like my last 1986 305 block was? Or is it better to get rebuilt and know which components were used?

Sorry for the long story and any advise would be appreciated. This is my first repower and I want the best bang for the buck. Fuel usage isn't a concern, costs go from 2300 reman 2900 new then 4000 reman and 5000 new for the 6.2. Goals would be to break 50mph if possible, and be able to cruise at a lower rpm due to more power.

Anyone hear of raytek marine? Hes saying upgraded pistons/cam longblock for 2800 and claims 370+hp?? is that possible with a cam?
Other options are marine power, michigan motors, rapido and center state engine builders.

First issue, a 6.2 will kill the drive, so that is out. Maximum 300hp into the Alpha drives.

My preference would be to ignore the hyped up claims and just get a 'standard' long block.... A bigger cam will just mean LESS low end torque. This is one I picked off the 'net... http://www.michiganmotorz.com/350ci-...ent-p-122.html It has a mechanical fuel pump mounting. And it's new and has a roller cam option..... If you do want to get more 'bang for your buck', then you need to go Vortec, and that will entail a new intake and carb, as well as all the electric fuel pump gear...

Your right, I do actually have a pre-vortec motor. I just brought it home and verified the 12 bolt intake. I'm thinking a silver or bronze motor from michiganmotorz. This would be around 4000. They also have a mercruiser gen+ motor its close to 5550. On question I have is: do only the Mercruiser have stainless valves? In their gen+ listing it lists them on all other new vortec motors its not mentioned. Do you think its worth the $1000 to go to a vortec or should I just replace what I have?

It's not just the 1K on the engine, it's also a new manifold, etc... Not sure how much that would run to in your part of the world.. (Certainly not cheap here )... The extra 20 or so ponies will add a few mph (maybe 3), but that's all. A few pennies to the pound of better fuel economy, but not near enough to pay back the extra...

I ended up with a new vortec from Michigan motors. I went with the fuel pump, intake, and new delco distributor. I drive out there Saturday. It was a smooth transaction. I appreciate the advice I figured spend the extra now or I'd regret it later.
