I deleted my vro pump and added a three port fuel pump (in,out, vac)the only pump I could find was for a 25-30 horse and it came with a 3/16 out to carb port,I found a barbed 3/16 to 5/16 fitting and fired it up but top carb seems to be running out of gas.Would it be the 3/16 fitting or the pump its self?Several people said it would work, but I'm not sure any help would be thanked!

not too sure if the pumps are the same or not, but if the outlet is too small, I doubt they are, could be a problem running at full speed, the pump may not be able to supply enough fuel (maybe)

You may want to try a fuel pump off of a 1983 70 hp. #385784. If your old vro was still pumping fuel you could have just disconnected the oil system and mixed your fuel 50:1.

Try a local parts house such as NAPA.

Lowe's and Home Depot both have good selections of fittings.

No luck at lowes or local auto parts house have not been to NAPA yet.I guess the ultimate test will be trying in the lake!I know the smaller barb will give more pressure but not sure about volume, guess I'll be a test dummy in this 25-30 degree weather, will post back if or if not it works.many thanks to everyone that post on this site its very helpful

seeing as you are messing about with fuel pumps, make sure your motor is getting oil, or the pump will be the least of your problems, they are a good motor, why not fix it properly? I think you will end up with a dog of a motor in the long term, bits and pieces from here and there.

Re: 1997 70horse fuel pump

can't say whether it's the pump itself, or the small outlet, but in my opinion you are suffering from a fuel restriction.

before VRO, the same pump was used on all 3-cyl & most v-4/v-6 johnnyrudes from 1972 through 1983. Pumps used on smaller motors definately have a smaller outlet.

were it mine, I'd go ahead and get the right pump. noelm is right, starve it for fuel, turn it into an anchor. Try one of these OEM part numbers 0385784, 0438559, 0388268
