After setting for a week or so this motor is impossible to start with out squirting gas in the carbs. It has been tuned up, the primer rebuilt, cylinders have 130 compression, carbs cleaned. The primer works as I pulled the hoses and gas does come out when activated, but it only wants to start and die unless I squirt gas into the carbs several times... can anyone think of something I or the boat shiop has missed?????

What is your starting procedure?
Will it start if you hold the key in while cranking, and after it starts?

Are you squeezing the gas tank fuel line bulb to prime the carb bowls and using the fast idle lever?

Pump the gas line bulb several times until hard, turn the key one notch and push in, count to 10 slowly then turn key to start.. may have to do this several times before the engine will fire up but then dies, it may start and die several times or not fire up again unless i squirt gas in the carbs.... don't know about holding the key in after it starts never tried it....

Try holding the key in while you crank it.

The primer only works when it has pressure applied to it. This can happen 2 ways the first of which is pumping the bulb up, this is 1 shot deal and by the time you count to 10 it has been done squirting for probably the last 6-7 numbers. The other way of pressurizing the primer solenoid is the engines fuel pump. it creates pressure while cranking, and thus can allow the primer to keep squirting beyond the initial blast of the bulb provided pressure, giving you the needed fuel for a cold start.

Of course if it cranks while you have the key in making the primer shoot for to long, say more than 10 secs you stand a good chance of flooding the engine out, and needing to open the throttle to allow it to start much like an old carbed vehicle.
