1997 8hp tohatsu 2 stroke outboard

i recently got a 2nd hand outboard and it was running perfect.
then one day i went out and it just conked out i gave it a couple pulls then put choke on and full throttle and it started again and then 20seconds later it did the same thing. it runs for a while in idle but not when it is in drive

You didn't mention model... Year doesn't count... If you have an M8B, parts are still available. Your symptoms could be almost anything, but are probably fuel-related. The best advice is to whip out your copy of the Factory service manual (don't bother with the aftermarket manuals), and diagnose the problem, paying close attention to the fuel system.
