First time to crank this year the engine smoked heavy at first then less the more I operated it, but still smokes. Should I change the oil that has been in the tank for 5 months? Would that help? If so what oil would you recommend? I bought it used and do not have the boat manual. I only use it 10 or 12 times a year.

I am pretty sure that the 2 stroke oil does not go bad. It should smoke less and less as it reaches proper operating temperature. I wouldn't worry about it right now. Go run it in water and see if it gets better!!!

Daze, A lot of motors are loaded up with fogging oil, prior to winter storage. This oil is burnt off in the spring, causing lots of smoke.

2 cycle oil does not go bad in a resevoir.

Daze. Dont worry about the smoke right now. All 2 stroke engines will smoke alot when just brought out of winter storage. Its the characteristic of a 2 stroke. If you have a weed eater or chainsaw or even an old dirt bike laying around. When ever you start those up the same thing happens. Motor should be ok. If you continue to run it and it doesnt stop, check your ratio make sure you are running a 50:1. If you are loading to much oil it will smoke alot.
