looking at maybe purchasing a 97 19' wellcraft excel with a 1997 150 evinrude oceanpro for 6100 bucks. Looks to be in excellent condition with maintenance records. I was looking at some older forums from a couple yrs back about the motor seems to be a good motor. Has anyone out there had any experience with it. Any advice on the purchase would be greatly appriciated. thanks

If the engine is a Fitch you don't need it.

For that lolly I'd want a pro checking it out, if its your first boat a surveyor is cheap insurance and can help drive the price down.

The OP is a very solid carbed motor. Very thrusty by todays standards.

whats a fitch

they introduced a fuel injected line, something went wrong, they went bankrupt and the fitch are like orphans, you'd need software to read codes.
BRP bought the johnson evinrude line and don't seem to want much to do with the fitch's. When they run they're great, but they aren't simple to work on.

I have a 1994 150hp, optical ignition is as hi tech as I need.
as dingbat says they're kinda thirsty but we're men around here.:p

release the hounds!

The Ficht motors were introduced in 1998, they're not hard to work on, BUT demand computer skills. The DI motors are the only future for two stroke motors into the years ahead.

So I think what you guys are telling me is that if it is fuel injected I really dont want it. I also like things simple. Not much into using computers to fix things. I prefer wrenches and screwdrivers. Thanks for the advice this forum is extremely helpful. I currently have a 14' McKee Craft with a 60hp ob. Just looking to move up to something a little bigger and faster.
