When I pull the starter rope the engine does not turn over. In fact it pulls effortlessly as if it is not grabbing. I am not entirely sure how the system works. It would appear that when the rope is pulled the assembly should grab the shaft in order to turn the engine over. This shaft is smooth so I am not sure if it is supposed to grab it by friction. I went to the sears website to order the part I suspected I needed(pulley bearing seal) and was told that it was unavailable.

I am looking to find out if my assessment is correct and what part that I need to replace and where to find it.

Thanks

Howdy, Bigal.

Welcome to iboats. :)

You need to start with a Repair Manual.

When you have diagnosed the trouble, broken or missing part, try these guys: www.twincityoutboard.com

Good luck. :)

bigal1966,

I've not seen this problem in my shop, but it sounds like the 'one-way' bearing in the recoil sheeve is bad,not the seal. You can get the whole sheeve from Mercury for about $55.00.They don't seem to offer just the bearing.

If you can remove this bearing from the sheeve, and the sheeve isn't damaged, try an industial bearing supply house. It won't hurt.

I don't think the seal will help, the bearing is designed to grab in one direction only.No one says you can't try cleaning and relubing it first.

DHP
