Im looking for ideas on what i can do to my 1997 Johnson 115 spl with its cold start and idol issues. The motor runs like a champ after you take off. it just seems not to run right at low idol and cold start. I was thinking about a set of plugs to start out but thought i would throw it out to the iboats pro for some advice. Thanks in advance. PS I did run a can of SeaFoam in the tank but havent seen much change.

I'd start with the simple fixes first. May sound silly but on the cold start issue I would read your owners manual and make sure you are following the starting proceedures to the T. Next I would do a compression test. Plugs next, then go through the ignition wireing, pull off each ignition coil and clean the contatct areas real good with sandpaper and a wire brush, clean each coil where it makes contact with the block then sand any corosion off the block where the coil makes contact. Use a little electrical grease on contact points. I would have someone check my spark plug wires. Even pull the powerpack and clean the contact points on it. After doing all this I would hook up a timing light to each plug wire and watch it fire. At least you will have a good idea if all cyls are fireing.

After that you might start on the fuel system. Try running off an external tank. If you are still having problems I would consider cleaning/rebuilding the carbs and maybe the fuel pump. If all this fails you might get a manual and go through the link & sync proceedures.

Hope this helps.

Re: 1997 Johnson 115 spl

my thoughts are that if a motor is running great at top end most of the "standard problems " are not present..ie bad compression, bad fuel flow, bad ingition, ....if it runs really great at the higher rpms and gives good WOT in the proper range..BUT idles poorly...id think that is is just adjustments in th carb...throttle plate not fully closed , clogged low speed jet, linkage isnt right 100%..maybe even something as simple as the throttle screw isnt set high enough!!!! low speed needle not adjsuted properly..ect ect

good luck
