I have a 1996 or 1997 J150EXEDB 150 Hp ocean runner. About 8 months ago i started experiencing what i thought my have been cavitation but this weekend it became apparent that it is not. Before when running cold the engine ran GREAT. After getting hot it would run to 4500 rpm fine anything more the engine would hesitate/shutter you let off the throttle back below 4500 and it was fine. This weekend while running my buddy had pushed in the choke/primer while running and the water temp light came on after bogging down a little which would be expected when priming a warm engine. I shut the boat down to make sure wasnt running hot and appeared fine, however, upon restarting it would run great to 2400 rpms and nothing more could not even plane out. After getting back to ramp and inspecting i noticed the Primer/Decarb vavle had a crack in it and would actually leak when priming the engine? Could this small leak be allowing air to mix with the fuel causing the problem and if so When we primed at full speed could this have allowed even more air than was already getting in and caused this to happen. When it did go down to 2400 rpms any throttle amount over that made the engine shutter/hesitate and the whole boat shook with it. The following day i took it out again in hopes of it just being the valve and sure enough as it has in the past it ran great when cold. I have a new valve already on order. It needs replacing for sure anyways. Any suggestions? Thanks, Scotty

Sounds like the SLOW system kicked in. My bet is the motor is getting hot. When was the last time the thermostas and water pump were serviced?? Also noticed you're in my town.

San antonio, Yes. You had actually responded to some of my earlier posts I am still having same problems. I personally checked to see if the thermostats were opening/closing they appeared to functioning normally. I have not serviced the water pump. I was thinking of going ahead and doing that. If and When the Slow kicked in the boat/engine shook/hesitated/shuttered pretty good. Wouldnt the SLOW just keep it from going over 2500 rpm? I cant help but think air is getting in with the fuel mix? Thanks

The water temp light came on as soon as the primer was engaged while underway could this possibly trick the slow function into turning on.

The temp- switch is in no way connected to the primer thats why I'm thinking water pump. My 120 shakes like crazy if you try to accellerate when in the SLOW mode.

Ok. But would the water pump explain the shaking/sputtering while going from 4400 to 5000 rpm only on a warm engine? Maybe i should replace the primer valve and water pump. Its about due anyways then give it a go and see where we are. My next thought would be coils, then powerpack, then stator. What are your thoughts? Thanks

Do the water pump and give her a test run. The higher the rpm's the more water needed to cool the engine. I'd do a compression test too. Doesn't sound electrical to me if it rune fine at all other speeds warm or cold.

The water pressure gauge showing good pressure 25-30 psi when running at high speeds. Are you thinking the engine not getting proper cooling causing it and if the pump is bad would there still be good pressure? Also do you know which pump i need and do i need the housing and all or just the kit looks like sierra # 18-3211 maybe. Thanks again.

change the solenoid primer if it is cracked and leaking any spark and u could be in big trouble.I just replaced mine on a 94 rude, I thought my fuel pump was going until i found the cracked primer
