Hello I have a 1997 Johnson 130hp engine and it wont start now.
It ran fine about a week ago then it would not Idle (but at high speeds ran fine) so i rebuilt the carbs. It started fine i run it for about 20 min's rev the engine put it in gear and rev it. It ran perfect but now when i went to take out the boat today it wont start and when it does start it will kill.
I did get to stay started long enough to put it in gear and give gas but it seemed like it had no power.
Anyone know what could be wrong

You said at first that it ran fine after you rebuilt the carbs, and then when you took it to the lake it would not run. When it did run where you at the lake or did you have it on muffs in your yard. I had a mechanic tell me one time that any motor will run in the yard on muffs but putting it in the water and getting it to run was quite a different matter. (back pressure and all)

I ran the engine at my house with muffs.
Well I went back out side and tryed to get to start again it started but ran bad had lot's of poping. So i took off the carbs again and adjusted the floats and the cleaned everthing again and put it back together and it started right back up ran like a champ.I let it run again for about 5 minute's then let it sit again for 5minute's and started it again. It fired right up.So now i will have to wiat to tommorow to try it at the harbor inthe water.

Also A local boat mechanic told us to check the fuel pump.He said that if when you prime the fuel bulb the gas should not go pass the fuel pump.
but mine go's pass the fuel pump and into the carbs i checked.Does anyone know if this is true.
should it stop at the pump or does it go all the way to the carbs.

Thanks
BadBoy

Yours is the correct function. Your mechanic doesn't know too much about fuel pumps and carbs, or you misunderstood him.

When you pump the bulb it goes all the way to the carbs otherwise how do you get fuel to start your engine.

BadBoy, test the recirculation valves. With a bad valve the engine will run for a little while and then gas starts loading up in the intake manifold and floods the engine.

The valves are under each carb in the intake manifold. Each has a small hosem attached that goes to the cylinders on each side. You should be able to locate the hoses and follow them to the valves.

How can i test the Valves i pulld one of the hose that goes to the cylinders and it was wet like it had gas in it.

Well ran the boat the other day and it had no problem's.We drove it down the coast for about 20minute's at mixed speeds most high.then we went diving then drove home with no problems.
Then we went to go out yesterday and we got about 300 yards from he harbor and ther engine killed I pump the fuel bulb and the engine started back up. but then it did it again and again. so i went home. and today i replaced the VRO fuel pump.So now i hope that the fuel pumpwas the problem I started the boat after replaceing the fuel pump and it ran ok sounded a little rough but will try again tommorow.

Also while i was runinng the engine today after i replaced teh fuel pump.I noticed that every once in a while there would be a little puff of white smoke Is this normal.I know that 2 stroke engine's smoke but not sure if they give little puffs once in a while.
Well I hope it wont give any problems tommorow.

Thanks Everyone
BadBoy
