on the bottom of the handle feel for a cutout or notch, pull the throttle to full reverse and it should line up with a setscrew remove or loosen it and the handle can be wiggled off then you can get the mounting screws and and such

I'll give this a shot.

You need to remove screw 56 and 49 and then separate the outer and inner handle. As noted above you need to get the set screw 57 out also and pull the handle off. At this point you should be able to remove screw 40 and the whole handle should now be loose. You need to take the cover 42 offer to remove all the screws 45 under it. At this point I'm pretty sure you can pull the rest of the outer portion of the mechanism away. You will likely need access to the back side of the panel that the shifter is attached to to sort of help spread everything apart.

thanks for the detailed info. do you think the neutral safety switch can be replaced without pulling the whole unit?

The neutral safety switch is on the back. I doubt you can get at it unless you have tons of room.
