Have a problem with my 1997 Seadoo GTX for about a year now and it is driving me nuts. When I pin the throttle from a standing start it will accelerate up to plane and stick at 5200 rpm still holding the throttle wide open. It will stay that way until I momentarily back off the throttle and pin it again and it will go up to 6500 rpm immediatley and reach top speed. Also if you hold the throttle wide open when it is stuck at 5200 rpm and hit a heavy wave or wake it will jump up to 6500 rpm on its own. Just like you turned on a switch. Any suggestionss??? Could this be a sticking RAVE valve?, or an electrical problem with a rev limiter?, if it even has one.

Re: 1997 Seadoo GTX Wierd Problem.

I have the same ski. And also experienced similar, if not same, symptom on RPM after I bought it. I found that one of the RAVE valves on the head had burned through the plastic valve inside. So I guess mine was sticking also since I got the difference in RPMs from one instance to another. I replaced the bad parts in the valve and it was fine after that. I now get 6500-6600 RPM consistently.

But be aware that there is also a RAVE valve on the rear muffler that acts as a pressure regulator. Out of curiosity, I also disassembled it to find that the spring had broken. When I went back to the dealer to get another spring, he told me that it too will cause performance issues. So you might unscrew the red adjusting cap and have a peek underneath at things.

Yes, it does have a limiter built into the MPEM. I think the rev limit is 7200 w/o looking in my manual.

Let all of us know what you find out :D

Keep in mind that it could be something else too. But the RAVE valves are easy to inspect - even take all the way apart and take out the "blade" valve that encompasses the piston wall with out any problems. And if there are problems, then it's a good thing that you opened her up:)
