If I understand correctly you remove both front and rear motor mounts from boat @ the bottom and remove the moter with the bell housing still attached AFTER removing stern drive--correct?

You DO NOT remove only the front mounts and pull the moter away from the bell housing.

You remove the lag bolts holding the front (side) mounts to the stringers. You remove the two bolts holding the flywheel housing to the inner transom plate. You should have the drive off to pull the engine.

Ayuh som f*** up typing 6 instaeed og 8s and twice to boot.
898 v8

"You remove the two bolts holding the flywheel housing to the inner transom plate"
From inside the boat or outside after I remove the outdrive, I don't see them.
The front of the motor mounts on two larg adjustable munts so yo may not be thinking of a 898, I'll try take some pics soon,

Yes 1979 and thanks for the link to Manual #3
I get typing pretty fast some times.

"You remove the two bolts holding the flywheel housing to the inner transom plate"
After looking again I see what you means by the flywheel housing to inner transom plate connection via the two bolts. It also looks like you could do it by detaching the engine from the bell housing so I was just wondering.
Thanks MR. Bond-o and MR. Don S

I don't understand why Don S insists on removing the lags?

On my boat it is two bolts sticking out of the floor on each side that go through a thick plate mount that holds the single adjustment bolt that is for raising and lowering the front of the engine. It seems it would be easier to just remove the top nut and washer off and lift the engine off that.

Anyway I know to leave the bell housing on which was what I was wondering about.

Yep, same here, just spin the top lock nut off and lift the engine up and off them... So much easier than trying to get the screws out of the wood 'n fibreglass... Lots easier to re-install too....

1. On many boats, you can't lift the engine straight up because the boat is built over top of the back of the engine. So just lifting the engine a 1/2" allows you to move it forward, then up.

2. You don't mess up the threads on the motor mount while removing and installing the engine.

3. The motor mounts being on the engine makes it easy to sit on the ground on blocks. I always run the engines on the ground to make sure everything is ok before going back in the boat.

4. The threads on the mounts are usually really rusty (I work on salt water boats) and you can't get them loose without some initial rust removal and heat.

5. It's usually easier to get a 9/16" or 3/4" universal socket, extension and ratchet on the lags than a 7/8" or 15/16" wrench or socket on the large rusty nut.

Other than that, no reason.

Just curious. All mentioned have alot merit!
My preference (usually) is lift off of the mounts. Leaving them behind gives me something to aim at setting it back in. Still have the "wrestling match" getting it aligned, if needed.
