I have been looking for a decent used 2 stroke 15 HP for a while now. I found a 1997 that is in good shape guys asking $1000.00.From what I have found in my area (DE) price seems ok. I have been looking on E-Bay and Craigslist not a wole lot of 2 strokes out there in that price range. Curious what you guys think a couple of dealers said that seemed high to them.

It all depends on the condition of the motor, where it was used and how it was maintained. If it's a saltwater motor then that could take away from it's value due to possible corrosion issues. You really need to do a sea trial before you buy any motor, check it's starting, idling, mid-range and wide open throttle. If it runs good and you want to buy it, then offer him maybe $750, maybe he will take less. I sold my 15 year old, mint condition Yamaha 4HP 2 stroke a while back for $600, and I'd say the guy got a real deal because the motor was like new. Good Luck!

Re: 1997 Yamaha 15HP 2 stroke value

I have sold over 5 1995 yamaha 15hp 2strokes for $1400 or more but these motors were cherry.I mean clean as a whistle.2Strokes are in so high of demand right now that people will pay what they have to.If the motor is clean were you can eat off of it and everything checks out then it is worth it 100%.A new 15hp 2stroke yamaha is going for,now hold on to your chair,$2900 or more if you can find them.2yrs ago they were $2100 average price but since yamaha has stopped making them the marinas have just hammered people on prices as they know people will pay the high prices.I have seen them as high as $3700 which is flat out nuts as i can get a brand new 30hp etec for $3000.But people want that 75lb motor. There is a dealer here in fl were i went a few times to buy some stuff and they had like 50 of them and they were like $2300 which is a great deal.I went back like a yr later and i was gonna buy one and i asked hey are they still $2300 and he said no there $3200 i said are you on crack[exact words i used]He said they were never the price i told him as he tried to pull a fast one on me.I said you are out of your mind. You know the funny thing he had 4 25hp 2stroke yamahas sitting right next to them for get this $3300,$100 more then the 15.Figure that one out, well Good luck and if you are in fl let me know maybe i can help you find a nice motor.

This time of year, the motor as you describe is not that overpriced in any area. Location seems to make a big difference in value. Ask the dealers that said it seemed high to sell you one in nice condition for less and see how quickly their tune changes. A '97 model should have lots of life left if it's in good shape. I agree wholeheartedly to get a water test if you can. At most, it is $200 overpriced in ANY area, a very good price in many. How bad do you want to go fishing? Are you going to die if you find one 200 bucks cheaper next week and you've already bought this one? How nice is the paint on the skeg???
Good luck,
JBJ
