Just bought a boat that has a "97 model yamaha 25hp 4 stroke on it. It had not been run in a long time nad had marine mechanic clean carb as it would not start. It starts and runs well at low speed (trolling) and kind spits and sputters its way into high speed at times. When it is at high speed I can bring it down to low speed for a few seconds and then back to high speed with no issues. After running at slow speed for several minutes then when try to go high speed it just spits and sputters at about 2000 rpms and will not advance to high speed. If I toy around for a while going back to low speed and slowley attempting to go to high speed eventually I can get it to go high speed. It seems more like an ignition or some kind of an electronic problem more than a starvation for fuel but I'm not sure. Anyone help?
Also need an operators manual but can't find model and serial numbers on the motor. Found one tag that said 06/97 manufacture and that was it.

Thanks for any help.

Sounds like you still have a problem with the carb, take it back and have them clean again or find someone that can do it correctly and adjust properly. All model #s I have seen were on the mounting bracket.
If manufactured in 97 then should be a 1998 model.

Re: 1997 yamaha 25hp 4 stroke spits & sputters

I looked on the mounts and found no ID tag other than the manufacture date. Looked for evidence one had been removed or fell off and everything looks normal. Any other thoughts on finding the model and serial # tag?

Thanks for the input on getting the carb cleaned again.

My prop needs repaired or replaced. Blades look banged up from hitting rocks or something. Any suggestions for reasonable price and turnaround time?

you can buy a new one and keep the old for a spare, good to have a spare to get back home if you brake a blade, or have the old one reconditioned. Need to check your local prop shop for cost and time frame
