This problem has now happened twice, since about a month ago. The Engine starts fine Cold, runs great. If you run the engine for about 2 or three hours, pulling kids on tube etc, engine still runs fine and starts.. When you park the boat or let it sit for a few hours, when you go to start it, it cranks fine, but does not even attempt to start.. If you wait another few hours, it then starts right up like nothing was ever wrong.. When it didnt start, I checked each of the four cylinders and I was getting spark from plugs.. I also pumped up primer blub hard, and still would not start.. Its almost like a vapor lock or something.. The plugs looked okay.. This seems to be a heat buildup problem.. Does anyone have any ideas what could be happening, and maybe something I can do the next time to try to resolve this weird problem... The Carbs were rebuilt last June, and ran fine until now..I'm using a good grade gas 89 oct, with a 50-1 mix..
Also the engine is not overheating, the warning light/beep never came on.. Any Help would be aprreciated...

What plugs are you using? You may also try going to 87 octane. Have the thermostats been removed? What is different from a month ago to now? Anything been added? Changed? Serviced? Bow light still work?

Let us know!

Re: 1998 115hp Evinrude SPL

The Marina told me to burn a higher gas octane, last summer after the Carbs were rebuilt, it worked fine till now. The only thing I tried in early May, was to use B-12 carb cleaner in Gas tank, I went at least two/three tanks fill ups before I had this weird problem. The Spark Plugs are what the OEM calls for..I also changed the Plugs after the first time I had this problem...
So its not the plugs...Any Other thoughts.. Thanks

You might try a little cooler plug like the QL77JC4. And 87 octane will be slightly cooler too.

When it sits and you try to start it, does it ever "almost" start or just spins over?

Good luck!

It just cranks, without any attempt of starting. Once when this happend I took all the plugs out and replaced with another set I had, and still just cranked without attempting to start.. Do you think this could be a heat related problem other than the plugs?

Re: 1998 115hp Evinrude SPL

This past weekend the engine acted up with the same symptons, I came to the conculsion its not a heat realted problem, cause we were fishing and the engine was not hot, after sitting for awhile I tried to start, and made alittle noise like it was trying to start, then it just kept cranking, I primed bulb etc.. This time I sprayed some starting fluid into the Carbs, and after a few cranks it started right up... This happend twice this weekend and both times it started right up when I used starting fluid.. The engine runs great and starts right up if you dont let it sit for a long time like a hour or so...Anybody have and ideas on what could be happening??? Thanks Russ

russrio,

You need several things for the engine to run.

1. Fuel.
2. Air.
3. Compression.
4. Spark-at the right time.

I suspect fuel. You only need 87 octane. If you have been running premium, I would suggest a good decarb. procedure. Do a search on this board for "decarb".

Also, you may be experiencing a vapor lock like condition. Possibly a weak fuel pump. Does the engine smoke alot when it does start?

Is the engine Oil injected?

Re: 1998 115hp Evinrude SPL

The Engine is not Oil Injected, you mix 50-1 to gas. The engine smokes alittle, if you rev it up... The Mechanic who rebuilt the Carbs last year recomended 89 octane with a good oil brand (Quick Silver).. Question If it was a faulty fuel pump, wouldnt I see some performance problems when the engine is running Half to full throttle, the engines runs great when it starts etc..

russrio,

A struggling fuel pump may operate just fine at higher speeds. However, it may not have the oomph to overcome a vapor lock. Rebuilding the pump is easy and inexpensive.

Thanks for your help... Would you rebuild or replace the Fuel Pump with a new one?? Doesn't the fuel pump just consist of a Screen/Filter and a diaphragm? or is their more...

russrio,

They're not too complicated. You're right, a few springs, a diapragm, and a gasket or two.

I would attempt the rebuild.

Can I buy the kit/parts from like West Marine or Boat Usa Store, or do I have to go to a Boat Marina/repair shop?

russrio,

I like the OEM parts-that means a John/Rude dealer. Some of the aftermarket kits cover a myriad of model years and models and may have some parts that you do not need, thus being somewhat confusing.
