While making an initial run in my 99 Viper Coral 202 at Lake Powell. 30 minutes into run, 4600 rpm 42-44mph (gps) I all of the sudden had a loud knock in the engine. Shut her down immediately and pulled the cowl. Heads were warm, but not even close to too hot to touch, had the wife fire up the engine. knock still present, felt the heads, didn't feel the knock back there, put my hand forward towards the intake, and definately felt the knock there. my initial thought is I lost a crank or rod bearing, but I am not a 2 stroke mechanic... I am a certified auto and heavy truck mechanic but 2 strokes aren't my strong point. The flywheel is tight, Stator doesn't appear to have made contact on the inside, was running great up until that moment. will still start up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The boat is new to me, only the 5th trip out. So much for my winter trips to Lake Powell this year:(

Check the compression, plus with the plugs out put a long rod of some type on top of each piston and rotate the flywheel slightly each way. When you feel a clunk you've found the problem. If it’s a bearing on a rod that is.

Check the gearcase oil as the early 3L motors are bad about chitting gears and make a knocking noise...

Found that the #4 hole has a bad rod bearing by doing the plug removal trick. Hopefully I can get it rebuilt... I'll know once I get the PH off of it.
Thanks for the replies!
