I have a 98 40hp Ser# OE333447, bought it 4 months ago,and have had her out aleast 6-7 times trouble free. Yesterday i took her out with the family on board (21 ft pontoon). She gave a little trouble starting, (start idle die) (start idle a little longer die) ect. until she kept running, then we where off after approx. 20 min i throtled back to wait for draw bridge and she stalled coming off high rpm to idle position. It would start/die but not run, batt was very low and would only crank 3 tries to restart. We got a tow
I have checked/ changed:
Battery to MarineMax x2

Plugs to NGK Bottom cyl was fouled. both fire now checked with light type indicator

Carb had leak, due to inlet valve -replaced reset float to spec

Checked idle sync, roller appears in sync

I did find Stator resistance high according to Clymer manual (500-600 ohms)mine is 735

She will barley start sound very lazy and will die almost imediately ( warmer the motor faster she quits) untill finally no start.

I was reading the forum and recall someone mentioning that the stator was ok at 825 ohms???

Can anyone advise me on the next best course of action?

Thanks

I doubt this is stator related. I would test the compression. You mentioned that one plug was fouled and the other was not. The plug that is not fouled could be the problem. If you trailer the boat try hooking it up to muffs. If it is a bad cylinder it will probably run good on muffs.

I tested the compression and top cyl was 70 lower cyl was 140. appears that the head gasket is blown. It blows compression out of the thermostat port. 4 bolts broke off even after i soaked them with PB Blaster. I resoaked all off them and will try to remove the head.
Thanks Eurolarva

I feel for you. I had the same problem with my exhaust gaskets. Three broken screws. Had to redrill and re tap into JB Weld. Not a fun route to go. I was told after I did this to mix the JB weld with less hardener for tapping. Dont know if it works but I had to refill and retap 3 times before I could finally put enough torque on them screws to seal the up. Good luck.
