Just bought a nice 6 hp (1998) Mariner and saw some oil leaking from the unit,
So I have worked on some outboards and surely can't be hard? how do you get the darn *****shift lever out of the head? Any help would be great Thanks.

You pull the powerhead...Why would you remove the shift lever to get the lower unit off? They have nothing to do with each other.

I have the motor on a stand, removed the 3 bolts for the lower unit, it came down a inch or two then seemed supended by the shif arm? If this is right how do you get it disconnected from lower unit?? I should have asked all this before I started. Thanks for our help.

Only two bolts for the lower unit. One at the front, one at the back. You disconnect the shift by removing the rubber plug/grommet on the motor leg, then loosen the bolt that holds the upper and lower shift rod together. Now here's the lecture part....Service manual, service manual, service manual. It will prevent you from making costly mistakes if you do your own repairs:)

We must be talking about different motors. the shift lever is 1 piece?
This motor seems like a heave duty type? it does have 3 bolts that hold the lower unit on. The guy I got it from said he thinks it's like a larger hp but de-tuned? it is much larger than a 5hp merc I had before.

I think you must have the 2 cylinder domestic Mercury....I was referring to the one cylinder Japanese model. Ignore my procedure as it is obviously incorrect for your model.
