I inhereted my dad's baby when he passed away last year. Took the boat in last month and had a complete tune up and inspection done. It ran great according to the shop.

Well, cleaned it up and detailed it this weekend, and tried to start it and it wont start. The hose is hooked up, run switch is on, bilge pump on for 4 minutes (as recommended by the owners manual), and gas is going into the carb. It cranks but wont start. Took the battery to Schucks and had it charged/tested and is fine.

Am I missing something?

Any help to a new boater would be helpful.

Thanks.

Re: 1998 Bayliner

Are you getting fire? Make sure your safety lanyrd is connected. Make sure your throttle lever is in the neutral position when you try to start(vertical). You may try priming the engine as well. On the control lever, press the throttle only switch in. With this pressed in move the throttle from idle position to wide open throttle a couple of times. This will kick the accelerator pump in, thus priming your engine. Also you should be running the blower for 4 min. instead of the bilge. The blower will suck all of the explosive fumes from the bilge of the boat. Thus preventing a fire.

It's the 4 cylinder, 3.0 merc..

I'm gonna try what blg2007 said. Is the throttle only switch the button under the handle to move it forward? Seems so basic, but feel like a retard....

Thanks.... I will let you guys know if I got it running....

Okay, found the throttle only button. I didn't do the priming first when I tried to start it. Gonna go out and hook the hose up and try it all again.

Keep you posted.

Re: 1998 Bayliner

Thanks everybody! I went out there, primed it (now that I know how to) and throttled it up a little and it cranked right up!!!! YAHOO!!!

I wasn't doing all that yesterday. Just turning the key with it in neutral and had the bilge pump instead of blower on. But I'm rolling now.

THANKS AGAIN!!!! AND HAPPY SAILING!!!!
