Re: 1998 DT 140 Overheating...Please Help

Corrected the corroded area with the JB Weld today, looks pretty good and feels strong. Parts also came in late today, it's been raining all afternnon so didn't get to install the parts. It seems the spring on the new pressure valve is a little stiffer than the old one so maybe that's the problem. Gotta work the next three days so I won't get back on it till 8/3. Hope to report a good test drive then.

Re: 1998 DT 140 Overheating...Please Help

Well...all I can say is anybody wanna buy a DT140.

Took the boat out and it overheated even sooner than before. I'm baffled, I can't even think what else to do. Brand new impeller, wear plate and housing. Brand new thermostat, head gasket and water pressure valve. I repaired corroded areas that might leak leak exhaust gases into the water pump chamber. Even installed a new oil filter/flow sensor for good measure

Something I did notice today while crying into the lake was that while sitting there in neutral there were small bubbles coming up from the prop area. The engine exhausts through the prop hub and I would think there should have been a lot of larger exhaust bubbles. Don't really know what this means, but maybe an exhaust issue is the root of my problems.

Re: 1998 DT 140 Overheating...Please Help

I've been e-mailing back and forth with a mechanic at Browns Point and he suggested checking the gasket on the exhaust jacket and cylinder head as well as the seals for the water tubes. He said that most times the problem is on the suction side of the water pump with the symptoms we are experiencing. I've done the head gasket so I guess one more order from Browns Point in in the making. I received more parts today and will replace them on Wednesday or Thursday. I ordered all the grommets bushing and gaskets for the water tubes as well as the gaskets and plate for the exhaust chamber. Based on Eshaw's post and the advise from the Browns Point mechanic, I believe replacing the seals on the water tubes is gonna be the ticket.

:D
Just got back from my test run and looks like the problems are corrected. Traveled across Lake Monroe and back at WOT and no overheating. Looks like I had the same problem as Eshaw with the severely corroded area between the exhaust and water chambers. JB Weld saves the day again. Thanks for all the advise from everyone.

Went on the first fishing trip since the the test run and the motor performed great. Traveled 8-9 miles with 3-200 plus pound guys on the boat and no overheating. I can even hear the tell tale stream hitting the water traveling through minimum wake zones the flow is so strong. I now consider myself a sudo marine mechanic...LOL
