I am having problems getting reverse gear. I have had the gears undercut still I cannot get reverse to grab. It rattles when it tries to engage (but shifts better when gear oil is warm)

I have adjusted the shifter so that the dog clutch is pushed further toward reverse but unless the boat is stationary it will still only just engage.

Does anyone have ideas as to how far the 'yoke' that moves the gear selector should move in each direction (forward & reverse) relative to neutral (which points straight down)?

I am leaning toward getting reverse gear cut again to sharpen up the edges and move the shifter more toward reverse.

Is this a likely fix or are there other solutions?

Jamin

Re: 1998 DT150 gear shifting drama

More developments - I pulled the gearbox apart and reversed the dog. When water tested we had reverse and hard to get into forward. Problem seems to lie in the reverse dog as reverse gear is in better condition that forward. I have had the dog cut to allow more space for the clutch to drop into gear.

Water test tomorrow.

Re: 1998 DT150 gear shifting drama

yes, i am posting reply to my own question, but I have solved the problem.

By cutting the reverse side of the dog at an angle similar to the forward side, it gives more room for the gear and dog to mesh together. End result is perfect shifting.

I have noticed other posts on this topic and no-one seems to have any answers, but at least I now know what works and what doesn't.

If you want the details email me at jamin.forbes@rex.com.au and I can fill you in.
