1998 Evinrude WOT Problems

I own a 35 HP Evinrude Triple which has up to this year been trouble free.
In the past month, WOT troubles started. Initially the motor slowed down and died out on the water. It started up shortly after with no bad signs. I changed the spark plugs, which all look consistent color wise. That worked for about 5 hours, then the motor bogged down again.
I added extra oil to the gas tank and things again improved. Lots more smoke.Lasted another week, then bogged down again
I put some fuel injection cleaner into the gas tank, thinking it was the carbs. Sill bogged down.
Thought it might be the VRO, but no horns, and the oil level does drop.
If I leave the engine overnight, I can be assured it will run well for the first 1/2 hour or so, then the bogging starts, especiall after slow driving.
It will sometimes kick in and out of high speed when bogging at WOP.
I have checked the coils with a meter and they all read the same, as well as checking the conections from coil to plug.
At 1/3 throttle, the engine seems to run ok, maybe a little rough. when it's not running right I can tell because it's a little slower to start.
Any ideas ?

Sounds like it may be overheating. Check for that and do a compression check. If that check out okay remove the coils and clean the grounding staps and where they ground to the block. Give her another try.

Re: 1998 Evinrude WOT Problems

Thanks very much .
It never occurred to me that it might be the power pack. It is my impression that they either worked or didn't. I will get it tested, however.
The engine does not appear to be overheating - I have one of those alarm systems that's supposed to sound a warning when that happens. "SLOW" I believe it's called. Also, based on my past experience working on motors, when they get hot, they stay hot - this one kicks in and out like when a coil goes, but as I say, the coils all test out in that they have the same readings on my ohm meter.I will clean the coil ground connections and do a compression test.
This is the first time ever I have been stymied like this to the point that I can't tell if it's fuel delivery or electric. I'm inclined toward the electric, however, as I've checked the fuel pump filters, tried the primer bulb trick and emptied the carbs at the drain plugs - no difference.

Re: 1998 Evinrude WOT Problems

i was in the same boat (pun intended) as you. It was driving me nuts trying to find it. Spent all summer dealing with it. The worst part was that it was so intermittent, that everytime I went to test for problems it would work fine.

Hot/cold didn't matter. Would run all morning no problem, and then start acting up. Or would act up right of the bat, then clear up and be fine for the rest of the day.

I've only run it 4 times since the powerpack replacement, but so far so good.

good luck,

FishHog
