I understand what clanton is saying. But if the engine is going into SLOW mode doesn't that say the engine is truly overheating? I spit on the head and it sizzled.

Ok guys, just my 2 cents, but there is a specific fix for that problem. Your Evenrude/Johnson dealer should have a factory bulliten (SP) on that, it involves drilling a hole in a specific location in your midhousing.

Re: 1998 Ficht - one for the expert out there

Well here I am 3 years later, I have run the boat without the thermostats since my last posting. This year I decided to tackle the problem again and started with the basics. I replaced the water pump myself (the mechanic at the parts store assured me I needed the water pump with the bleed hole). I also removed the exhaust housing and discovered the gasket at the top of the housing was melted beyond recognition, I replaced both upper and lower gaskets. Got the motor up and running and the water is shooting out with more pressure than I have ever seen. I have had the boat out for about 20 hours since and it has not overheated, in fact it has been running like it always has, and that is excellent. Can someone confirm that this exhaust housing gasket stops the exhaust from mixing with cool water? When I originally had the overheating problem one of the symptoms was a choking sound, like sucking in exhaust.
However, I still have a temperature gauge that max's out when in fulll throttle. The air coming out the engine is cool and the water shooting out of the engine is cool. What do you think?

what is the water pressure when running wide open?

you might suck in some air into the waterintake.

any transdusers close to the engine?
redirecting away from LU.

Thanks for your response, Somewhere in the thread I did remove the transducer's from the hull and trialed it without success.

Did you reference the service bulletin that required drilling a hole?

I feel your pain, I have a 2000 Ficht 225, and have had my share of problems, The last one was the ECU and high pressure fuel pump failed simultaneously, creating a set of symptoms that not even a factory rep could diagnose. The old "start replacing parts" finally turned up the culprits. Turns out the Ficht motors ECU have water jackets that don't move enough water at low rpms. This motor runs like a champ when it runs.

Thanks for posting your info,,It was very helpful to me troubleshooting my problem. 1999 175 Ficht was doing similar to yours.I took T-stats out as per your post but did not see any improvement other than temp.I finally noticed some peices of a plastic sleeve lying below the intake cover and after some investigating i found they came from the linkage for the air intake butterfly's.I guess since its 10 yrs old the sleeve aorund the cam following roller deteriorated and broke apart and since this sleeve, about an 8th of an inch thick, was broken and fell of the roller, the air intake butterfly's were not opening far enough to allow the correct air / fuel mix and causing it to run rich which was causing it to flood out and run hot because of the rich fuel mix.I replaced the roller sleeve and its running great and not overheating either.just wanted to let you know how much help your post was and wanted to give this info to you in case you run into the same thing..guess it just deteriorated because of age so i am sure others will have the same problem

Re: 1998 Ficht - one for the expert out there

Can anyone expand on this butterfly air intake a bit furthur? Maybe isolate it's location for me. The current problem I have is the engine runs great at high speed or trolling speed but anything between that I get intermitant hesitation like she bogs down. I have to either increase the throttle or bring her back to an idle to get her running smooth again. Amy thoughts? I would also like to know if anyone has a link to the bulletin that talks about drilling a hole in this engine to correct water flow. Thanks
