Re: 1998 Force 75

Sorry to hear the miss is still there. It can be really frustrating trying to track down a problem.

Deiseldaddy (Force 75 ELPT missing and rough idle) traced a miss he has on the same engine to a faulty exhaust gasket. I’m still chasing my miss. Two of my check valve in the recirculation system are faulty and need replacing but I’m not holding my breath that this will fix the problem.
As far as props go I have a 12 pitch prop on a 16 foot fibreglass cuddy cab and it will rev out to 5800. With a standard 14 inch pitch prop it drops to 5400. I had the 14 inch prop made slightly larger in diameter and reshaped (who knows what pitch it is now) and the revs dropped to 4700. It was always very sensitive to total boat weight and can vary by 200 or 300 revs. I only mentioned this to show maximum revs can be effected by weight and prop selection. If you have added weight to the boat it could be what is causing the lower revs.

I just read the post by dieseldaddy, he was having the same problems with #2 &#3 as I'm having. Am I on a wild goose chase thinking it's a electrical problem.

I think my miss is caused by an electrical problem too but I’ve just removed the reeds and they need replacing. Who knows? Photos in a new thread.

I think it is just a matter of checking likely causes and repairing problems as you find them. Trouble is it can get expensive using this method.

It may not be the reeds causing the miss but fixing them will make the motor run smoother regardless and eliminates one more thing.

Once I get the reeds fix I’ll post the results.

Disconnect the enrichment solenoid from the manifold and see if the problem goes away. SOMETIMES, engine vibration will cause the solenoid to flutter open and the engine to run too rich at higher RPM. If that solves the problem, replace the rubber grommet with a new one and don't tighten it too much. If replacing the grommet does not help, replace the solenoid itself.

Re: 1998 Force 75

After reading the post by dieseldaddy I wanted to look at my exhaust plate gasket. I noticed that the bolts weren't very tight. I Should have just tightened them to see if that would have made a difference but I went ahead and took it apart to look. I noticed on the plate where it looked like I was getting some water by the gasket. Have new exhaust gaskets on the way. Also ordered new intake gaskets,I'm going to have to take them off to look at the reeds. I have new Boyesen reeds on the way, can't hurt.Keep fingers crossed for me.

I'll be very interested to see how you go.

I'm in the process of removing the exhaust plate at the moment. The motor has been running in salt water and several bolts are not budging. Haven’t applied any heat yet. Just letting it soak in inox for a few days.

How was the block holding up? Was there much corrosion?

Good Luck

How did you get to the lower bolts on the exhaust plate?

I am trying to get the bolts out of mine but cant find a spaner that will reach.

Re: 1998 Force 75

TwoFish,
I used the shortest 3/8" box end I had, luckily I have small hands and a lot of patiance. I was able to get the wrench on the bolt, hold it on there with a screwdriver then push down using another wrench. Probabably took close to an hour to get the last 3 bolts. One of them I had to use a socket and a pair of channel locks. My next idea was to drill an access hole for my 1/4" extension in the lower part of the shroud.

Thanks for the reply 1uz4x4.

I need to go to a good tool store and see what they have that may work. My biggest problem at the moment is trying to get the corroded bolts to move at all. The motor is run in salt water. I have posted a thread hoping for some ideas.
