So after putting a new starter on my 1998 Force 90 HP outboard and putting on new the water pump, I hooked up water and started it. It cranked on first try but cut off after about a second but kept making a loud sound. It wasn't the overheat siren. Turning the key back to off didn't do anything. I saw some smoke around the lower unit, it could have just been the exhaust. I had to unhook the battery to get it to stop. The starter wasn't hot nor the tilt/trim motor. Any ideas?

When I turn the key the starter turns, but when I turn the key off it keeps spinning. The battery is fully charged. Why would this happen? Thanks!

Sounds like the key switch is grounding out somewhere.
The key switch has a loose wire?
The solenoid is shot.
Take a test light.(SBP,means should be power)SNBP,should not be power.
Turn on the key, don't try to start.
Ground the test light. Then try both lugs on the solenoid SBP on the one going to the battery.
The other. It will have power if the starter is spinning.
Then the yellow lead SNBP.unless your turning the key.

With the key turned on but not starting, I used the test light:
the red is the only one with power.

Do i need to unhook the starter to test when turning the key to start?
