Re: 1998 J90PLEEB--What's the prognosis Doc?
Hi Folks!
The motor has been stored on tilt for ~1 week. I took off the cover and got a look. Not much of a puddle this time. Stuck my finger in it and it seemed like pure oil (but I guess if it had been sitting a week, any gas would have evaporated leaving only oil behind) However, I took some time to look really, really close at everything.
I noticed that it appeared as if gaskets and seams on the fuel pump/vro assy were weeping or leaking. So, I cleaned everything up really well.
Tilted her up and down a couple of times and then noticed that the leaking or seeping was, yes indeed, from the gaskets of the fuel pump/vro assy. I tilted her all the way up as high as possible and fuel mix dumped out of the lower carbs and left about a 1/3 cup of mix in the lower motor cover.
Cleaned that all up. Then carefully checked all of the screws on the fuel pump/vro assy. They were pretty loose. I tweaked them all about 1/16 to 1/4 of a turn and tightened up everything. Oil/fuel weeped from the gaskets when I did this. Wiped everything down again.
Hooked up my 6 gallon portable tank. Left it outside the boat on the ground. I made sure the fuel line had zero air in it before attaching to the fuel filter/water separator.
Started up the motor. Huge difference! Evacuating all of the air from the fuel line made it start up easy. No stalling. A little rough idle, but nothing terrible.
No leaking or weeping from the fuel pump/vro. Everything stayed dry. Shut her down. Tilted her up and left her sit for a 1/2 hour.
Came back and everything still nice and dry. Except for two minor oil drip lines. So there appears to still be a little bit of a leak behind the fuel pump/vro closer to the motor where I cannot see.
But I got to tell you. It looks SOOO much better.
Do you think I can run her this way safely the rest of the season? Then I could tear into the fuel pump/vro and carbs over the winter months.
