1998 Johnson 150 Ficht Fast Strike

Hi every one,new to the board and first time posting. I have a Johnson 150 Ficht Fast Strike,<br />Model# J150U ECR, Serial# 0 04469/08. My question is that I get alot of black soot on the plugs. Installed in the engine is XC12 PEPB plugs. I run about 3500 rpm. After reading some of the posts on this year and make of engine I feel I might not be running high enought rpms which might be causing the black soot. Would greatly appreciate any answers. Thanks

The plugs on those engines always soot up, just the nature of the beast. If you think the plugs look bad, you should see what the cylinder head looks like(sure wish I could post a pic). Use an oil specially blended for DFI engines.

That's the correct plug for the ficht 150 with pinned cylinder heads.If your engine has non pinned cylinder heads ,it calls for the 7712 plug.Both are gapped at .030"<br /><br />What is you engines capable wide open throttle rpm as propped?

Pinned heads were part of the second update for these engines. It makes it easy to tell if an engine has been updated.

ob, I bought the boat in Rawlins,Wyoming in December 2004. The boat dealer said that I should change the prop to a higher pitch if I remember correctly because I will be useing the boat almost at sea level. I think the prop I have on it now is a 14.5x19. Dealer said to go to a 21.He said not to go over 5300 rpm with the 19. <br />Thanks every one who responded to my message.

Your engine should be capable of turning up 5500 or a bit better as propped.No need to stay under 5300 rpm.Just don't exceed 6000 for extended periods if it is capable of turning that much as propped.Just remember,if that engine is overpropped and not capable of turning 5500 plus,it is essentially being "lugged at any throttle setting,which can and will contribute to carbon buildup.Also insure that the sparkplugs are indexed when serviced as the placement of the arc is critical to a proper burn.Past that ,I am not well versed in the specifics of a ficht engine and recommend a trained service tech with a computer check your engine out to insure proper operation.

have a dealer look up rpm spec from service bulletin do not over rev this engine or you will have a big pile of nothing
