well she's alive. i put on the 25 hp carbs and swapped the jets. verified the venturi, intake holes, etc were the same size. runs apprrox 31 mph on my 1648. 3 batteries, 24v trolling motor, decked out. instant hole shot. ran about 10 minutes and checked the plugs and they were a nice light brown color. ran again for 2 hours and checked and they look the exact same.

Glad to see you have it running. Your speed is about right mine will run about 33 on my 15 ft Starcraft which is a smaller boat than yours.

living in the mid atlantic, how much does warm temps and high humidity effect the motor running? its pushing 90 with 60% humidity. water was 80 degrees

how much would you estimate your boat to weigh?

Re: 1998 johnson 3 cylinder 35 hp

I figure mine ways around 600 lbs if that, she is pretty light. I am using a 15" prop and my max RPMs are 5800. I could use a bigger prop but they are very hard to find OMC did make a 17 with 3 blades and a 16 with 4 blades. The standard prop from the factory was a 16" 4 blade which unfortunately I don't have but could use. I normally run about 4700 RPM, at those revs the boat does about 27 and is on gas.

Re: 1998 johnson 3 cylinder 35 hp

wind was kicking pretty good today, and had a passenger. boat was doing 27 upriver and 28.5 downriver. reconfigured all my weights, and believe the motor was pushing around 1,000 lbs. sounds about right on the speed? still a really good hole shot, and the trim really picked up the boat.

next up is installing a tach. i know on the red plug omcs, the grey wire was the tach signal. still the grey on the new models? i dont see a grey wire in the wiring plug at the key switch, so i'd assume i'd need to run one off the motor itself?

heres a pic of a plug after 2 hours of running.. looks good right? all 3 looked the same.

Your plugs look good. I would say our speed is good and the triples are great out of the hole.

Your wiring harness going to the controls should have an 8 pin plug and three wire loose wire purple, black and grey.
See the link to another thread about a wiring question regarding the install of a tach that should answer all your questions. The grey wire comes from the Rectifier / voltage regulator. You can also pick up the signal form the yellow and grey stripped wire.

great, my tach should be here any day. as for setup, how much do you predict im losing by having my cavitation plate almost 2 inches below the bottom of the hull?

Your cavitation plate should be flush with the bottom of the hull or maybe one inch higher. Try it and see what happens.

going to have to pick up a small jackplate or a transom vertical extension. its pretty much as high as it can go right now. would you recommend a 3" plate or one of the 5" cmc vertical extensions?

Yeah, looks like the motor could come up and inch or two. The anti-vent plate, located just above the prop, should be level or slightly higher than the keel/bottom of the boat. Looks like it may need to be trimmed out some too. Thankfully, there are lots of aftermarket jackplates and transom risers. Some of them even have built-in trim and tilt mechanisms.

You need a jack plate to raise it up. I thought I saw to much spray behind the boat in your video.

The cav plates about 3" below the bottom of the boat and it does have tilt and trim. How much do you guess I'm losing by not having the motor up?

You could possibly gain a couple of more MPH it all depends on what size prop you are running and your RPMs. 31 MPH for a 35 isn't bad though. My father has a boat similar to yours with a 35 Honda and his top speed is about 27 MPH.

had me and a 220 lb buddy ( im 240 myself) in the boat today and was turning 5500 rpm with a 15p aluminum. id like to pick up a 14p stainless prop for catfish tournaments with full live well and loaded down with gear. would you recommend turning point express, stiletto triad, or the solas new saturn?
