Ok first of all i want to thank everyone on this board. You guys are truly sent from god.

After i fixed my last problem, with the help opf this board i ran into a new one. I have a lot of trouble coming out of the hole shot. it used to take me under 5sec to hit the throttle and be on plane. Now it will plow water for awhile and then gradually gets up on plane. i would say what took 5sec before now takes 15 - 20. The top end seems fine but might have lost a couple mph, nothing drastic though. The prop and everything else is the same i havent changed anything that would effect the hole shot. i have read other posts and found that it could be my fuel line, back pressure in the tank, fuel pump, and a few other things. What worries me is that on startup only it makes a weird noise that i have no way of explaning. the closest thing i can think of would be the tail end of a donkey's eeehhh-AAAAWWWWHHHHH. Its like backpressure releasing or something. The compression when cold is from 104 - 113. i thought the sound could be my reeds going bad so maybe a leakdown test is in order. Has anyone ever had a weird noise like this on start up? Any suggerstions on where to start would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

Don't know about the sound. But you could have lost spark on one of the cylinders.. Is there a spark plug wire disconnected..

Check for spark on all the cylinders..

Let us know...

No... i checked and replaced all the plugs. they all had normal carbon build up and all looked like they are burning pretty equally. The noise is really bugging me i want to tape it and post it as an mp3 or something. it is soo weird. anyways any other ideas?

ITS NOT A BEARING NOISE. IT SOUNDS MORE LIKE BLOW BY. AND THE STARTER DISENGAGES, THAT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS I CHECKED. ITS SOO WEIRD!!!

COULD THE LOW END SATOR BE OUT AND CAUSING MY PROBLEMS ON THE HOLE SHOT???

i had a small motor that had a build up of carbon and corrosion inside the casing around the top of the drive shaft. it made a hissing/scraping noise.allso it was like driving a car with the park brake on, maybe thats the lack of power

I STILL GET FULL REVS @ ABOUT 5600 WOT. THIS BOAT HAS LOST A FEW MPH IN THE 2 YEARS I HAVE OWNED HER BUT ALWAYS HAD A DECENT HOLE SHOT. THE NOISE LIKE I SAID IS MORE OF A WHISTLE OR BLOW BY. ITS NOT A SCRAPPING OR BEARING NOISE. IF YOU WERE TO SAY HHHUUUUHHHH, LIKE YOU HAVE A PLUGGED NOSE YOU MIGHT COME UP WITH THE SOMETHING CLOSE. I THINK IT S THE INITIAL BLOW BY WHEN YOU START HER UP BUT I CVANNOT FIGURE OUT ON WHAT. THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE.

First of all, don't use all caps on your text! Shouting!!!!
Check your small return lines (6 of them), could be one is loose and your are hearing that, if that is the case, you will sooon loose a bearing for lack of luberication.

ok i got the noise figured out. you guys were right it is the starter motor. me and my buddy got the stethescope out and pinpointed it. how much do starters run? anyone bought one recently?

Back to the power loss. tomorrow i am going to run some sea foam and make sure the fuel hose bulb stays hard. i bout a new fuel filter in addition i bought a new water seperator/filter(which was changed 3months ago but owell). i also installed new plugs before my last trip. anything else i should try while i am out? anybody have an idea? could it be the low end stator? i know that went out on my last boat, but when it did i know i couldnt plane out or go over a certain rpm. thanks

Hey bass have you looked at the spark plug wires .pull out an ohm meter out . check them . once they get high resistance and you add water to the envirement .they can arch much easier. look at the machine running at night see if. or try the nikola tesla grounded screw driver trick around your coils and plug wires .also bad spark plugs dude if the wire and resistance is right ..secondary ignition hates the water. check carb gaskets .Such as a vacume leak.volumemetric efficency .hard to say .

dont know what boat youve got but check theres no water got in it. under floor or in spaces that are suposed to be sealed. get the boat out and rock it to hear any water sloshing aboat.......... a chap here complained his boat had got slower, then found 500 pounds of water under the deck

http://www.rodnreel.com/dmarine/mes2042m.htm

Fits 2.0 & 2.4 Liter V-6 Engines
Replaces Mercury # 50-60594A1
Order Part Number: MES2042M
Your discounted price: $169.95 plus S&H
Maybe this will help you on the starter. If you have a shop close by that does auto starter rebuilds, they could probably reuild it for you cheaper. New Merc is $$$$$$$

Re: 1998 MERC 175 NITRO SERIES POWER LOSS UNDER LOAD

UPDATE!
I ran a can of sea foam and changed my 2 fuel filters and i think thats going to do it. She runs much better. I have not got to test her on the water yet, but on the muffs the pickup and idle are sounding a lot better. The bulb on the fuel hose doesn't stay hard. is it supposed to? Or is it just supposed to stay firm? Maybe ill just change it to make sure.

All in all this problem i think is fixed for the most part. i am going out this weekend and will post another update. Thanks to everyone for the much needed help.
