I just recently bought a 1998 mercury 9.9 four stroke and it has a small leak on the bottom of the carb. Called the local boat shop here looking for the part and they said the part was obsolete!!! They told me my motor was a "bodansee"??? Apparently a European version??? They said most parts for this engine were obsolete now. The part that is leaking is on the bottom of the carb, there is a little round cover with a lever attached to it. According to parts breakdown it is a "diaphragm" inside the cover.

Anyone have an idea of what this diaphragm does and how to get replacement parts for it? Thanks

I don't have your serial number but this looks like your carb, if it is you need to call that dealer and tell him the part number to order it or find a more competent dealer. Here's a link

Here's a link but most of the parts are NLA like the dealer said, you might call Mercury customer service and they may be able to tell you a place to get what you need.

Re: 1998 mercury carb parts

I had a simiar problem with a 05 15hp 4 stroke. There should not be gas leaking out of there. The pump diaphram is leaking or the two small orings that go to the accel pump tube in the ventury. Mercury doesn't even have a part number for those orings, I had to go Tohatsu to get them. I did find that the plate on the bottom was not flat so I took some 400 grit paper on a piece of glass and wet sanded it until it was flat. The Bodasee uses the same carb body with different jets, and I don't know what that lever is for. A picture would help.

Re: 1998 mercury carb parts

after call to one marine place after another all across the u.s., i got one guy that told me that diaphragm crosses to a yamaha part number. got the part number from him, called mercury and they verified it is indeed a good cross to a yamaha number. found that the more i dig the more i am finding the same parts used on a 1998 yamaha 9.9 4 stroke!!! i.e...oil pressure switch, filters, fuel pump, intake and gaskets....and so on. the down size...yamaha parts are about twice the price but ya gotta do what ya gotta do when mercury lists them as obsolete. called local yamaha dealerships and they can get them for me, none in stock of course, but price is higher than i can get them myself online. looks like i will be ordering some parts soon.....maybe this will help others if they cone to need parts for their motor and parts as listed as obsolete.
