My 1998 wellcraft cruiser has twin 5.7 GS engines and SX drives. Need to know what the screw is in the drive picture and is it used during gear lube fill? (Ser# 4112043152):SX Dive 2.jpgSX Drive 1.jpg

Re: 1998 SX Drive Question

If this is the screw you are referring to, it's not part of the drive, it's actually in the pivot housing. It's a water drain. It's a hold over from when Volvo and OMC were doing the joint venture. Once OMC was bought out, it went away.
With the old OMC Cobra drives, it was needed to drain the water out of the housing, but with the Volvo SX drive, there is no water pump to deal with and the water drains out by putting the drive all the way down.
Has nothing to do with gear lube.

Re: 1998 SX Drive Question

Thanks Don S.,

Looks like my drives have anodes inside the hub cavity that attaches to a clip. Haven't seen any anodes that look like the hub cavity???

What do you think about this drive - only had the boat 1/2 a season?

Nothing wrong with those drives if taken care of. But like anything else, you can paint the outside, but if the inside is in poor shape, the paint on the outside won't help.

What's the model number on the drive? There should be a tag on the Port side of the drive, hiding behind the trim cylinder.

Re: 1998 SX Drive Question

(Ser# 4112043152), I agree, I just finished prime and anti-foul painting. I put 30 hours on her last season and was very happy with performance with know problems. Just checked oil at dip stick and it looked good. I will be changing the oil this weekend. Have to get the fill screw lose though - stuck pretty good. Look forward to getting tips from post here - interested in your pressure test results.

Re: 1998 SX Drive Question

I think I have a leaking prop shaft seal. Is this an expensive repair? Should I do both drives if only one is leaking?
