I have a 1998 Venom 225HP that I am having some issues with. Sometimes it will bog down really bad when I punch it from idle. If I hold it at WOT from idle it will usually die, but if I back out of the throttle and then slowly engage the throttle the engine will slowly pick up and then be fine. Also it will sputter and die if it idles for an extended period. Other than these issues the engine runs great. I replaced the VRO pump because my mechanic said it was about to go out, and I was hoping that would solve the problem, but it did not.

So where should I start to look for problems? My mechanic also suggested a carb clean which would run me 800-900 dollars, so I may try to do that myself, is it a tough job?

Thanks,

Petty

Eight or nine hundred dollars....whoohooo....wow.

It is an easy job, but there are a couple of places that you have to pay special attention to, and cannot get wrong.
1. All passages in the carb must be clear and clean.
2. Realize that the black carb body and the throttle plates are considered the "Carburetor Assembly" and both must be cleaned.
3. The throttle plates have a metal cover on the stbd side that is held on with 4 screws. That plate must be removed, and the tiny tiny holes leading to the throat of the throttle plate must be clean.
4. The small tubes extending down into the float bowl must be clear and clean. Suck on them to see if they are open. Blow aerosol carb cleaner thru them. Blow compressed air thru them.
5. You must be sure the throttle plates are in exact sync (all closed and all operating in unison). It will not idle right if you don't do this step.
6. Make sure the float is set correctly.
7. When you put the black carb body back onto the throttle plate, make absolutely sure that the o-ring seal does not slip out of place and get crushed when you tighten down the bolts.

Yes they are easy, but there are tricky things out there to watch out for.

I would love to do the job for you if you are close to Mims, FL.

PM me if interested. Won't cost 8-9 hundred bucks.....
