1998 Yamaha Saltwater Series 115 Alarm?

Hello,

Was running the motr the other day, ran great, but after idling around for a few hours and then cruising for maybe 20 minutes? the motor felt like it lost power (maybe some kind of electronic module cut down a couple cylinders?) and an alarm went off...

The motor ran fine the rest of the way home, and bluish-white smoke was coming out of the exhaust, and the prop had plenty of oil residue on it...so I guess it's getting oil (that and it would have blown 30 seconds after losing oil) Also, nothing seemed too hot...temperature seemed fine and the tell-tale was spraying water fine...so cooling system must be working...

Any idea what else the alarm could be?

Thanks, and happy new year everyone.

the oil alarm has nothing to do with oil flow.
if the engine tank got low,for whatever reason, you will get an alarm and RPM reduction and a visual indicate on the tach.
if it overheats you get the same alarm and RPM reduction and a visual on the tach or speedo depending on the guage.
you have about 20 min of cruise time left between alarm activated and your actually dry in the oil pump.
biggest isue I see with alarms like this is clogged remote oil tank filters causing slow oil transfer. this can allow the engine to use more oil at high speeds than the transfer pump can replenish.
idle for a bit and all is well again until the next time.

Rodbolt....at what point during a high speed run does the oil transfer from the remote tank? Does the engine oil tank drop to the second line and then the transfer occurs or does something else happen? I know that when the oil level in the onboard tank drops below the sender level and you turn the key to the on position(do not start) that I can hear the pump transferring oil. It stops when it reaches the top full line on the engine. Just curious if the same thing happens when running at high speeds? Thanks

oil transfer occurs anytime the trim position switch and the remote tank swicth inconjunction with the engine tank switch anytime the key is on.
if the remote tank and trim sender allow it then normal oil transfer is pump on at the low mark on the engine tank then pump off when the level hits the upper mark. this will repeat reguardless of engine speed as nessasary to insure adequate oil level in the engine tank.
if the oil control module does not get a signal or the signal is out of range from the trim sender no oil transfer will occur.
if the signal from the remote tank is open circuit you will get a yellow indicate on the tach and no oil transfer will occur.
if the engine tank goes about 1" below the lower line for any reason an audible alarm, red light or 3 bars flashing and RPM reduction will occur. when RPM reduction and audible alarm is activated you have about 20 min of cruise time left before the engine oil pump is pumping air.

Hey Guys,

I think it may be just the opposite - but I'm not sure exactly what...I was running the other night, and the alarm went off along with the RPM reduction...I shut the motor off for a bit, then started it and idled it, and then ran. About 25 minutes later the same thing happend, and when I looked back at the motor, it was smoking excessively (seemed like burning oil...not an overheating kind of smoke) and the was oil leaking from the bottom of the cowling and going everywhere.

What happend?

your killing me :)
the oiling system on that yamaha, known as prescion blend, is one of the most simple and reliable on the market. that being said its also the leading cause of failed master tech exams.
I asked once before, when you get the alarm what visual indicators show up on you OEM yamaha digital tach? and if ya aint got the digital tach, get one.
if the tach visual shows no oil alarms then its an overheat.
ya gotta seperate which system is triggering the alarm as the same horn and tone is used for all 8 possible causes of a horn tone on a yamaha.

Rodbolt,

Sorry for my motor-illerateness...all I really know how to do is fish 8)

That's another problem...my tach stopped working when all this happend - show's 0RPM, full oil tank, and no alarms/indicators...

Welcome back rodbolt. This is a hard one without any real information..The problem may be in the oiling if the transfer pump was staying on and filling the air box with oil. This would explain the excessive smoke and poor performance. It wouldn't sound an alarm until the main tank got low. The tach problem sounds like a disconnected green lead.
I have always thought the oiler system was as simple as could be to be as efficent as it is.
You need to either get a good factory service manual or a qualified tech to get this corrected. Not really rocket scientist or difficult to trouble shoot and repair.
