Re: 1999 115 hp johnson outboard

Thanks for the reply,Bob. what you are saying is wthout the lanyard, the engine might or might not start?

the laynard isnt for show......it is supposed to be clipped to your belt loop or jacket, and if by chance you fell over board , youd rip the laynard from under the key....when that happend the motor would shut off...because the friction of the "U" shaped clip on the laynard would "release" the stop circuit in the key..... if you notice you have to actually push in on part of the key recepticle to get the laynaRD ON!!!

START YOUR MOTOR.. AND PULL THE LAYNARD OUT FROM UNDER THE KEY QUICKLY...SEE WHAT HAPPENS

if you read my first post.....its important, and I have lived it for 4 years .....with a weak battery and or a poorly tunes motor....or mone that isnt getting the proper prime in cold weather.... your starter dissengages once it senses the motor trying to overpower the starter.... the bendix retracts...thus killing the starting...

there are sooooo many things that all have to be working and active for these motors to start and run...its not as simp[le as one things many times

Bob:So if the lanyard is yanked out, the power pack is dead and no spark occurs?
Then to restart, the lanyard has to be put back on?
Does that switch require occasional lubrication?

Prime the bulb --Raise throttle only lever--Then push the key in while cranking.-------When cranking the fuel pump keeps pressure on the electric primer.---Push in on key if motor falters after starting.

I am not sure how the stop circuit is employed....it maybe be just to disconnect the power flow through the key assy...

which might in effect be the same thing as you suggest, or it might not....but the purpose it to stop the motor so it doesnt run you over while you are taking a bath...

I have taken mine out carefully and the motor still starts and runs...but that maybe be a sticky spring in the key switch....but dozens of times i have tried to reach something in the boat or forgot i was tied to the laynard and i killed my motor when it broke free....hey it dids its job!

its very important if you boat alone

Took your suggestions with me and came to the conclusion that it starts best if I push in for 7 or 8 seconds and then turned the key.
If it started to die I advanced the throttle a little and then it continued to run. The bendix trouble never returned and it's obvious
the lanyard should be left in. Thanks for the help.

The key should be pushed in while cranking !-------Operation of the primer / injector is as follows.---------It is nothing but a simple valve that opens when key is pushed in or red lever is turned manually.--------When operated it sprays fuel into the engine when there is fuel pressure between the pump and the carburetors.-That pressure comes from the manual pump ( primer bulb ) or from the motor fuel pump when the engine is cranking.---It is no different than your typical garden hose spray nozzle.------If the main valve is open and you operate the trigger you get a steady spray of water.----When you close the valve ( no pressure ) and you operate the spray nozzle you get a bit of water untill the pressure is gone.---Certainly not for 7 or 8 seconds.
