Hi

I am just wondering if someone can help.
I've got a 1999 15hp 2 Stroke engine with something wrong with the gears/linkage. I think the actual gears are fine

The engine was rebuilt.

I can select forward fine.

When I am in forward gear and select neutral, sometime it will go in to neutral while other times it stays in forward.
If it does stay in forward, I then have to put it in reverse for neutral. When I then select neutral it stays in neutral until I put it in froward again.

I've taken the lower leg off and can select the gears by pulling the rod up and down. I'd be surprised if it is the gear box. If it was a linkage problem, I would of though reverse would be selected easier than forward.

Thanks

James

It sounds exactly like the gear selector rod and seems to have a lot of slack to do what you stated. So make certain there is no slack and that the upper shift rod is securely attached to the lower section. If that is loose, it could cause that easily. Also make sure the pivot pin is in place on the lower clutch dog selector and cradle. If it was not in place I can also see that being your problem... JMHO!

first off, this is a shot from just looking at a parts diagram...follow the rod from your shift handle back to the point that the shift rod snaps into a plastic connector... remove the clip from that connector and pull the shift rod free from the connector...the rod this connector is attached to is threaded as is the connector...turn the connector 1 turn at a time and reattach the shift rod...I don't know if this connector needs to move in or out, but you'll know if this makes a difference w/o having to move it in either direction very much...as stated I have zero personal experience in tis type of shift setup, but that appears to be the way to adjust the shift mechanism
