I got some good advice on changing the waterpump over the last couple of days, now I have another question.

Unfortunately, the engine is still overheating. The engine starts and runs fine, however it will run for about 5 minutes before the overheat buzzer will go off. The engine was running in a bucket, and at no point was water coming from the drain hole or out the exhaust of the motor. Is there any way to confirm that the waterpump is pumping water? Is this likely a thermostat problem? Do I have to pull the head off to get to the thermostat?

Thanks for the help!

Kent

If it doesnt spit water from the tell-tale, you probably misaligned the water tube in mid section with the water pump outlet or a piece of an old impeller is blocking somewhere, but thats rarely seen, especially on a motor that new. Drop lower unit again and check.

Thanks for the advice G Dane. I pulled the lower unit again last night, and fiddled some more with aligning the copper pick up tube with the water pump opening. Using nylon fishing line, a mirror, and about 8 attempts, I finally got it to go in.

As soon as I start the engine, a steady stream now comes out of the tell tale - even if the engine is cold. Is that normal or should that only happen once the thermostat has opened?

Thanks for the help - this forum is awesome!

Kent
