1999 4.3l: Something loose that shouldn't be...

I have a 4.3l that developed a rattle over the weekend, or at least I noticed it at the weekend.

When I had a look, I could see that there was something loose and spinning behind the main pulley that I'm guessing shouldn't be.

Looked it up online and I think it is the harmonic balancer.

Does this need replaced, or can it be repair (re-attached) and what else should I now worry about (oil seal etc)?

thanks

Thanks for the response.

Is replacing it a big job, ie expensive?
If it may have caused some damage, what should I look out for?

Hi KevC.
My name is Bruce and I have worked at Autozone for the past 24 yrs. Autozone has a loaner tool program that you can put a deposit on a puller and installer to replace the Har. balancer. Yes , replace the seal when you take it apart. Have fun , Bruce

Thanks, but I'm based in Ireland.

I've only just got this boat and it was just back from a service, but I guess this could happen at any time?

Is it an indicator of anything else, age, abuse, neglect?
