1999 90hp FICHT~Premix Conversion?

So I recently had my 1999 FICHT 90hp serviced. I had to get a new EMM off ebay and then get that fixed so needless to say, this boat has been giving me trouble. After finally having it on the water 4 times, I started getting the "No Oil" light despite oil being in the separate tank. My boat mechanic took a look and now says I need a new Oil pump on the engine. What pump exactly is this? The oil lift pump that looks like a disc? Is it possible to bypass this separate oil system for premix? Would changing out the diaphragm on the pump solve the issue? I'm not sure how the pump itself could just die such that I would need to replace the whole thing.

Ficht motors had many issues as you probably know by now. On the vro pumps the oil light lit up for low oil or low pressure. I think I would believe your mechanic, I find most mechanics are good people and are just telling you what it is. I know it's frustrating sometimes. My advice, and you probably don't want to hear it, is get rid of that engine.

You CANNOT premix that motor!!!! There is no way to do it and it will be an expensive lesson. Whatever is causing the low oil alarm must be repaired.

Gotcha. He said it needs a new oil pump, so I assume this is the oil lift pump. Isn't that just a diaphragm driven pump?

I see the lift pump is at least available....$300 something apiece. Oil injector unit $900 something....fuel pump not available. The $64,000 question, when do you cut and run.

Are you sure the EMM you bought is good?? Did you have an oil problem before the EMM change?

The fuel does NOT go through the crankcase on these FICHT motors !!-----Crankshaft and bearings would not see any oil.------Motor would quickly come to a " dynamic halt " and be ruined.----

unless you satisfy the EMM hunger for the proper codes it will put the engine in safe mode or shut down depending on the code

no oil code 38s will put you in safe mode.

EARLY ETECS like my 2005 had sotfware and...oil pump issues that needed updating and replacing under warranty .

you need the EV diagnostic software to service theseengines otherwise you are blind. EV DIAg version 5.1 will work on a FICHT

Thanks for all of the feedback. The engine definitely went into safe mode while I was driving it as the No Oil light came on and I couldnt go above 2500rpms without sputtering. The mechanic I use(d) is an Evinrude specific mechanic and he used the software. I actually updated my EMM in the last year. The one original to the engine wemt south so I found one from a 115hp on ebay and it was set up. Had yet another issue with the "new" EMM end of spring this year and it was repaired by CDI Electronics down south. Ran well for 4 outings before this latest oil pump issue. But I definitely hear the feedback to cut and run. The question is...do I repower and keep the boat or sell as a whole once I replace the oil pump? The boat isnt anything special...1983 Renken Bowrider, but I realize that buying a used engine would prob be cheaper than a used whole boat.

Depends on the circumstances if you keep the boat. Do you know the boat you have is 100% solid on the transom and stringers and the overall condition good or is it barely usable?

If not, cut losses and run or it will make you a very poor person.

One of the few reasons possibly to do a full gut and restore on a boat is finding a boat in such condition that it makes good a good long term choice to restore and keep. That way you know it's not a rotted piece of junk with lipstick on it listed for sale on the used boat classifieds.

There are very few 16 to 20ft fiberglass boats at least in the US older than 1988 that I would consider worth restoring. Most are junk because the owners left the boat interior exposed to the elements and rots away over time.
