I bought this motor new and this is the first time I've had any trouble with it. It's a 1999 90hp Johnson, 2-cycle. I'm getting ready to sell it and I wanted to show potential buyers that it works. I bought a pair of muffs, placed them over the water intakes, started the water flowing and started it up. It started fine, but no pee. Then I read through the "micro" manual and it said to have the motor at a good tilt. So, I tilted it as if it was on the lake, but still nothing.

My brother said with the muffs, it should pee even without running. Is this correct?

However, it's cold here (45 degrees). Is the T-stat not letting the water pass until it's hot enough? If so, how long should I wait (I get nervous with no pee). So far, I haven't waited long enough for any idiot lights to come on and I really don't want to.

I've looked through a lot of these messages concerning the pee problem, and at this point all I want to do is get a good plan together of what to check, in what order.

My list, from what I've read so far:

1. Check for clogged intakes (I already did this, they look great).
2. Check for a plugged pee hole by cleaning it out with a wire (paper clip).
3. Check to make sure the pee hose is still hooked up.
4. Check the T-stat.
5. Check the impeller.
6. Just plain screwed.

Thanks, ahead of time.

Time to replace the impeller... Case closed... ;)

It does not "pee" without the motor running on the muffs...

The impeller should be replaced at least every other year, so if you've never replaced it before, then you're over due for a new one...

So you're saying this motor doesn't have a T-stat and/or it is not a factor - correct?

The pressure relief valves stick on this engine, and it has 2 thermostats. I would start engine on muffs, give the tattle tale a shot of air pressure, increase rpms to about 2500 rpms for 10 seconds. Im guessing, because you did not give model number. Engine could be a 60 or 90 degree engine.

Engine model number is J90PLEE. In this situation, what specifically should I know about the 60 and 90 degree engines?

Also, I finally got a hold of the dealer. He said the same thing you people did (that's good to hear - a little trust builder).

The boat is stored outside. I will try it again when the temperature climbs higher than 27 (brrrr).

The dealer also said that the impeller is usually replaced every other year - I had no idea. I've had several other smaller motors for years and I've never replace impellers on them or had any trouble. Thanks for all the help.
