I just bought a used Capri 1800 with a Force 120 outboard. Neither the speedometer and tachometer are working. I could not find a pitot tube or paddle wheel for the speedometer, so does the speedo measure speed? Are the tach and speedo interrelated?

Welcome to iboats!

The speedometer and tachometer are essentially independent of each other. They only share their lighting circuits.

There should be a fitting on the back of the speedo for the tubing that goes to the pitot. Are there empty screw holes on the transom that indicate where the pitot used to be?

I did a quick search and, at least on some of the force 120's, the pitot tube is on the motor. Look for a hole or short tube just above the torpedo on the lower unit.

Thanks Fastfission,

I believe you may be right. We had the boat on a very weedy lake. So bad that I had to keep clearing weeds off the lower unit to keep the water pump running. I think the speedo was working when we first started out, so it must be plugged with debri.

Not sure why the tach quit. Maybe just a coincidence. I will will look for a blown fuse or a loose wire.

Thanks for the welcome NYBo. I dig forums! Nothing better than BS'ing with people who share a common interest.
