I have a 1999 Bayliner Capri Model 1954. I've been installing a new swim platform for the boat and been drilling multiple holes in the transom to mount the platform. Today I drilled 1-1/2" deep holes for the support rod mounting screws about 2 inches above the botoom of the transom on each side of outdrive. I noticed the shavings on the drill bit were dark and mottled, when I squeezed the shavings there was definite moisture in the shavings. All of the holes for the mounting brackets above the water line were completely dry.
There are no cracks in the gel coat and the visible interior areas of the transom appear to be sound. I have had the boat for three years. Is the presence of some moisture at this low point in the transom something to be concerned about? Any input/comments would be greatly appreciated.

The damaged area seems to be isolated to the left side where the support rod is screwed into the transom. The black through-hull fitting inest to the support rod is for a live well, this boat is the fishing model of the Capri. I removed the through hull fitting and it was obviously leaking. The "wood inside the trnasom was more like wet cardboard.

Any thoughts on how long before this would show up as a real problem that would demand attention? Or will it ever be a real problem if the rest of the tranmson is in good shape. As I mentioned in my initial post the rest of the boat is in very good condition.
