Hi fellow iboaters,

I have a 1999 Evinrude 150hp FICHT that is seems to have a mind of its own. Some times when I start it, it will start up and go wide open. I have to turn the key off to shut it down. This could happen 2 or 3 times and then start working normal. Yesterday, me and the wife were out fishing all day with no problems until the end of the day. We had the motor in forward gear just idling along and then the motor started speeding up on it's own. Got to the point where I had to shut it off by the key. I don't have any clue as to what might be causing this, so just asking if anyone might have any ideas where to start?

You could have a bad fuel lift pump on it where it's getting extra fuel into the crankcase from the impulse side.

very old post.....
CaptainSnake....
odd if RPMs go up you would think plug firing rate (RPM) increases as well
so wouldn't that be a computer controlled issue ?

these motors can be monitored with EV diagnostic software for trouble codes have you done any such servicing. If you go the the ETEC user board
and search a bit you will find links to software you can download and info building your own cable to mach your PC USB/rs232 port to your engine.
after you connect up you will at least be able to peer inside the brains of your engine and check for current and past faults

if such is the case (leaky injector) the fault detection of the EMM would probably not flag it in the fault log. Injector leak testing would help diagnose the issue followed by proper servicing or replacement $$$

mean while maybe a clean up would help.... see video injectors on ficht may be similar service wise ... up to you !
