I'm looking at buying a 99 Evinrude Ficht Defender outboard made by Bombadier. It is supposed to be a rare motor, made for the military. Can anyone tell me anything about the motor and is it worth $2700?

Thanks, Don

If the seller will let you take it to a dealer to see if its had the udates and check compression it might make a good motor. The early 98's and 99's had some problems and being used by military (training?) it may have problems or ton's of hours.

Re: 1999 Evinrude Ficht

OMC was still building FICHT outboards in '99.

The V4s were pretty reliable engines, but the V6s were terrible.

After Bombardier bought the assets they went to a lot of trouble debugging the FICHT system. The update/upgrades seem to have solved the problems if they have been installed.

If used by the military the engine has probably had the very best of care and maintenance and may have suffered serious abuse as well.

In any event, I think $2700 is steep for a 10 year old big V6 and out of line for a V4.

2700 is about double the value, in my book.

If the engine is a military spec engine, it may be a a "pump jet" model. If so, that would explain the price.
