I have a 99 force 120 and I recently had some trouble and found out that one of the reeds on the third cylinder from the top was broken. I have already taken the reed block to have new reeds put on it, but the mechanic thinks we should tear the motor down to try and find the reed that was broken and missing. My question is should this be necessary? could it haved already passed through the motor? If I tear into it, where would I likely find it apart from the most obvious inside the cylinder?

You probably can get away with just removing the head but your mechanic is correct. The piece of reed can if it already hasn't damage the cylinder wall or piston. It is always best to err on the side of caution with boat motors. A broken reed is costing me $1500 in powerhead repairs.
